Firefighting lines

The water supply of a fire protection system is often considered as the most critical component of the system. Moving the water from its source to the entrance of the building is the function of underground fire protection piping. This piping system must be extremely reliable to withstand internal and external stresses over long periods of time. PE 100(-RC) pipes and fittings can be welded together homogeneously by heated tool butt welding or electro socket welding. The welded joints are as strong as the pipe itself, providing a continuous leak-tight system. On the other hand, PE 100(-RC) pipes do not corrode or incrustate. This is a key point as in a case of a fire emergency valves will be opened immediately and if pipes are corroded or encrusted – particles may be flushed and clog the sprinklers inside the building.

HDPE PIPING SYSTEM FOR THE UNDERGROUND FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM OF THE DUBAI METRO DEPOTS

The security within the Metro depots will be ensured by an underground fire protection system that is equipped with AGRU pipes made out of polyethylene. The piping system was delivered by AGRU’s sales partner BMC Gulf, who received an order from the subcontractor Build Force. Additionally, BMC Gulf was asked to supply the appropriate welding machines and to take care for the project supervision at the construction site. Concerning welding machines fully automated CNC machines with data recording from WIDOS were selected. For the installation certified welders (acc. to DVGW standard GW 330) from the SKZ Training Centre UAE were employed

Dubai is booming. In 2008, already two million people have been living on an area comprising not more than 4,000 km2, and this development won’t stop regarding the yearly population growth of about 8%. For visualization of the enormous space problem in this country, compare this: In Austria currently eight million inhabitants are living on an area that is 20 times bigger than Dubai. Whereas the big construction projects don’t seem to come to an end, the infrastructure has not been adapted to the growing demands so far.

Since 2006, a project is in preparation that will eliminate going by car as sole possibility for being mobile: Dubai’s 76 km, fully-automatic Metro system. The Dubai Metro is an unprecedented project in the Middle East region. The increasing traffic, mainly caused by business and tourism, and also the pollution burden has been solved by September 9, 2009. Then, the first 52 km of the „Red Line“ – a metro that goes partly underground, partly on elevated viaducts – has been finished.

AGRU’s HDPE piping system will serve the depots with water for the underground fire protection system. In these stations, all trains are stored when they are not in use or maintained. Only FM 1613 listed piping components class 175 from AGRU have been applied, which guarantees high quality and safety. Furthermore, the many advantages of HDPE compared to other materials resulted in the selection of a FM listed HDPE plastics system:

AGRU as well as AGRU-FRANK fulfils the strict demands of the FM institute and has now an approval for PE 100 heating element butt welding-, electro fusion fittings and pipes according to FM Class Number 1613 „Polyethylene (PE) Pipe and Fittings for Underground Fire Protection“. The FM Approval is currently issued for the dimension range of Ø63 up to Ø400 mm in SDR 11. In future, this quality will be secured through an annual third party audit by FM. The pipes and fittings are approved for a maximum operating pressure of 12 bar/175 psi according to FM Class Number 1613.
